Productivity hack for depressive mood

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Years 2017-2018 passed in a depressive fog for me. Now someone in my network shared about a similar state of being. And that it impacts his work. So I remembered the method I was using. It's straightforward and it works.

Use it when you are in the Freeze zone:

  • Feel depressed, stuck

  • Want to procrastinate or plainly stare in the screen/wall

  • Can't talk yourself into doing anything.

The method:

Each time when you are in the Freeze zone, in your journal, answer the following questions:

  1. What am I doing now?

  2. How do I feel now?

  3. What do I want to achieve, i.e., what are my main goals?

  4. What will I do now for the next 25 minutes?

Then switch on the timer and do the action that came. Afterwards, repeat the exercise, if necessary.

P.S. This is a short-term hack for dealing with the depressive mood. Permanently, quite probable that the depression will cease when you make the life change that your unconscious is guiding you toward. Depression (or even bodily symptoms) can be the price we pay for not doing the change. That already is a separate topic.
